Student Ratings of Instruction
Information about Student Ratings
Every semester, students are asked to complete forms to evaluate the faculty for the courses in which they are enrolled. The results are collated, analyzed, and sent to the provost, department chair, and faculty member. This web-enabled application displays the results for each course for each faculty member. Team-taught courses will present two sets of results, one for each faculty member, if the forms were distributed in this manner.

  • The mean is the average of all responses.

  • The median is the middlemost of the ranked scores.

  • The standard deviation (S.D.) is a measure of the dispersion of scores from the mean. For example, if all students agree that Prof. X is excellently prepared, the mean would be 5 and the standard deviation would be 0.

  • NA responses and non-respondents are not represented in the calculations. The number of respondents to each question is also listed.

  • The number of respondents (#Resp.) is the number of students who completed the evaluation form. This may be different than number of students enrolled.

  • For each course listing, data are also provided for the appropriate department/program and college/division/school. University-wide data are also included.

  • Separate reports are displayed for data by means versus data by percents. The percentage data document the percent of responses to each point on the rating scape, from 1 to 5.

  • The office of Institutional Research and Reporting (IRR) maintains the student instructional rating system and designed this online format in response to a request from the Provost's Office, the Board of Visitors, ITU, and Student Government.
